Pregnancy is the one time in a woman’s life when she should not feel guilty indulging herself, one way to do this is to treat herself to massage. Massage in pregnancy and in childbirth has been used for decades to help the mum-to-be come to terms with the changes that occur as the pregnancy develops.
Why have a Pregnancy Massage?
Research has shown that having a regular massage from 12 weeks and throughout pregnancy is a great and safe way to help the mum-to-be and her baby feel relaxed, relieve tension and fatigue that is all so common in pregnancy.
Massage helps circulation, lowers blood pressure, improves complexion and helps the skin become more supple and elastic which can help prevent stretch marks. Massage can also improve posture and alleviate the discomfort that comes with pregnancy.
Can I have a Pregnancy Massage?
Although I am a practising Midwife please consult the midwife or consultant responsible for your care prior to the massage to confirm it is safe for you. A full consultation is required prior to a pregnancy massage so it can be personally tailored to the individual and to discuss any precautions we may need to take. Massage is not always appropriate particularly if the mum-to-be has high blood pressure or severe undiagnosed bleeding.
How, When and Where?
Preferably the massage is performed with the mum-to-be lying on her side. However, it can be performed in the seated position. The client’s comfort and modesty will be maintained at all times.
